The Father is constantly challenging and guiding in his own special way for all of us and I am truly blessed for having read and appreciated the extraordinary contribution that Walter has had on so many of us. Dear Fellow Christians, It has been some time since I have read, He Leadeth Me by Father Walter Ciszek and managed to reflect on Walter's life. Dear Fellow Readers,I thought I would share with you an email below that I sent to the Walter Ciszek website regarding the cause for his Canonisation. Obviously, I have never met Walter in person but with the Father's / Christ consent, I hope to one day meet Walter in Eternity. There is no doubt in my mind / soul that the Father guided / lead me in his own special / mysterious way to read the account of Walter's life. Very few Christians, besides Christ and some of the well known Saints would have endured and suffered as much as Walter had endured and suffered in his life, which for me is truly inspirational and transforming. With regard to Walter's Canonisation, I do believe he is more than worthy of the cause but in my mind, he is already Canonised because he is with the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit and all the Angels and Saints for Eternity. He Leadeth Me, William John Matthew Cummins Sydney
I purchased this book because it is going to be our first book to be discussed at our book club meeting at church. Ciszek went through pure torture while he was serving his sentence out in Russia for being a "spy". The book was easy to read and understand. Fr. It was an inspiration to me and any time that I think that times are getting too tough to handle, I can go back to this book and Fr. Ciszek's testimony and receive some more strength to carry on.
A wonderful spiritual classic that helps bring perspective to life realizing that every moment is ordained by God and meant to draw you closer to Him even if it means experiencing unimaginable suffering. An easy, yet profound read. I received it a week earlier than expected and my parents and I all read the same copy in the past 3 weeks. I'll be getting more copies since this is one I would want all my friends to read as well as keep on my own bookshelf.
Fr Ciszek shows that its core, the Catholic faith is simple - our purpose is to know, love and serve God and live happily with him in the next. This book is the follow-on companion book to Fr Ciszek's: "In Russia with God" and indeed they should be read sequentially. However, that book is short on reflections as to what kept him going and when one finishes the book, one is left with questions. One comes away from the book moved to the core of one's being at the marvelous faith and simplicity of the man. Finally, this book, aside from its beautiful spiritual message, offers an important insight to what life was really like in Stalinist Russia, a regime of systematic evil. "He leadeth me" written 10 years later explains in a simple way what sustained him, namely an absolute conviction that he was precisely where God wanted him to be.
Fr Ciszek, now that you are in the presence of the Blessed Trinity, hear our prayers that we too can be faithful to the will of God. The story recounted in "In Russia with God" is packed with details of Fr Ciszek's life in and out of Siberian labour camps. Fr Ciszek shows that a life which is conformed to doing God's will is a blessed, happy and peaceful. Fr Ciszek was and is (he is dead but for christians, he is superabundantly alive now, albeit not bodily) an extraordinarily humble man who saw God's providence operating in the smallest things in life. His life story is the concrete realisation of the spirituality set out in de Caussade's "Abandonment to Divine Providence". This second book was written with the help of Fr Daniel Flaherty SJ and this can be detected in the improvement in terms of the style of the writing.
So full of wisdom and Truth that it seems that it must have been inspired by the Holy Spirit. This is one of the most powerful books I have ever read. I am reading it for the second time this year and am as blown away this time as much as I was before. If someone were to ask me what it means to be a follower of Christ and a Catholic, I would have them read this book. Something we can aspire to forever.
